| Wireless Internet access, or WiFi |
|
| |
WiFi (Wireless Fidelity) allows you to connect to the Internet without wires using a portable device such as a laptop. WiFi is available within the Jessamine County Public Library and is provided free of charge to all customers of the library whether you are a library card-holder or not.
You need a portable device, such as a laptop, loaded with a web browser and a WiFi-compatible Network Interface Card (NIC) that is 802.11b compliant. Most people bring their wireless-enabled laptop computer to the library where it will detect our wireless network as soon as it is turned on. If your laptop does not have wireless built-in, you must purchase a WiFi-compatible Network Interface Card (NIC) that is 802.11b compliant. We cannot guarantee your equipment will work with the wireless network.
The library has limited power outlets available for customers to plug in their laptop. It is best to bring a fully charged battery in case electric outlets are not available. |

|

Q: - Can I search the Library Catalog and special databases using wireless?
A: - Yes! Everything available on our website is available to you on our wireless network. Since the wireless service is on an independent network, you will be treated as a remote user when using the databases. For more information on using our databases, -» View |
Q: - Can I print while using wireless?
A: - Printing from your wireless device is not available at this time, but you may print from one of our public computer workstations. If you need to print, please save your work to a 3.5 diskette, CD, USB drive; or e-mail your files to an online e-mail account, then login to a library computer workstation to access the files and to send the print job(s) to a printer. |
Q: - Am I allowed to use my notebook speakers?
A: - The library seeks to provide an environment that balances the needs of everyone as far as noise is concerned. Whether you are in a designated quiet area or elsewhere, noise from your computer may or may not be a problem. As the situation demands it, our staff may ask you to use headphones or to turn the audio off or down on your laptop. We suggest you always bring headphones and use them when planning to utilize your audio. |
Q: - Are there any restrictions on my use of the Internet?
A: - Internet users in the children's area are not permitted to access Internet sites which may be unsuitable for minors. Users in any area of the library may not use Internet sessions in a manner that is deliberately offensive or one that creates a hostile or intimidating environment. While accessing the Internet at the library, users must comply with all applicable federal, state and local laws. The library does use a filter (more), but ultimately no filter can prevent all questionable sites from appearing. |
Q: - Is wireless access filtered or unfiltered?
A: - Just like the library's public computers, WiFi access on your portable device is filtered. |
Q: - Is my information safe while using wireless?
A: - To protect the information on your laptop, we strongly encourage the use of security measures such as virus protection software and a personal firewall. Security measures are the sole responsibility of the laptop user. The library is not responsible for any loss of information or damage to your laptop that might result from using the library's wireless network. |
Q: - Can library staff help configure my computer?
A: - The library staff is not able to offer thorough technical assistance. You are responsible for understanding how to configure your own equipment. It is recommended that you check your equipment's manual. The library is not responsible for any changes you make to your computer's settings. If you need additional assistance, you may need to contact the hardware or software manufacturer.
