Great coffee, great music, and great giveaways are what’s brewing every month at this coffee house style music program. Our guest for January will be Larry Barnes. Larry is currently professor of music and Bingham Fellow for Excellence in Teaching at Transylvania University. He has presented programs of original music as well as traditional and modern piano music during his 44-year career. He is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Composer Fellowship, two Kentucky Arts Council awards, an Al Smith Fellowship, two Lexington Arts Council grants, and 31 ASCAP Awards. Barnes has fulfilled over thirty commissions, being twice named the Kentucky Music Teachers’ Association’s commissioned composer. His Toccata-Act of War, premiered by colleague Gregory Partain, was selected by the Society of Composers, Inc. for a concert tour and recording on Capstone Records. In 2008 he composed the original score for the film Euphoria, which took the Gold Award for Documentary at the Houston Film Festival and may be accessed at www.theeuphoriaproject.com. Barnes has served as the Kentucky/Ecuador Partners Musician of the Year, presenting lectures, workshops and concerts in Quito, Ambato and Riobamba. His Morning Gigue, recorded by the Slovak Radio Symphony, is digitally released on Amazon, ITunes, Rhapsody, and EClassical, as part of Parma Records’ “Con Moto: New Works for Orchestra, Volume 2.” His Rain Songs, named “one of the truly great works for flute and harp,” is released in 2016 by Alry Publications in print. You may reach Barnes by email at lbarnes@transy.edu. A recording of Rain Songs as well as his soundtrack to Euphoria can be found at his website, www.larrybarnescomposer.bandcamp.com. Larry will present original music played live and on videos of recent performances, and will discuss his development of musical style. He will also play his own arrangements of Irish tunes and Beatles songs.
